But you've got to get your old files back on your new (or newly wiped and reinstalled) Mac, and automatically restoring from Time Machine is the easiest and most obvious way to do so. It's not, however, the only way. You can also easily selectively restore files from just the folders you want.

To restore a Mac, you can use a Time Machine backup from an external drive to bring back older versions of your computer.; If you've activated Time Machine, restoring your Mac to an older Time. If the disk you selected isn't formatted as required by Time Machine, you're prompted to erase the disk first. Click Erase to proceed. This erases all information on the backup disk.
